Famous Capitals

1. London is the capital of UK, which is located near the river Thames. London is a major trade, financial, cultural, political center of the world. London was founded by Romans. London has four world heritage sites. They are the Tower of London; the Palace of Westminster; St Margaret’s Church and the historic settlement of Greenwich. Some other famous landmarks are Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, The Shard, Big Ben, the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, British Library and many others. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world. London hosted Summer Olympics for three times.

2. New Delhi is the capital of India. The foundation stone of the city was laid on 15 December 1911. It was inaugurated on 13 February 1931 by British India's Viceroy Lord Irwin. New Delhi is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub complex. New Delhi is the most expensive city in India for expatriates in terms of cost of living. In 2011, Knight Frank's world city survey ranked it 37th globally.


3. Washington D.C is the capital of the United States of America which is located in the east bank of Potomac River. Washington D.C. had an estimated population of 632,323 in 2012, the 24th most populous place in the United States. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.

4. Paris, the city of Love is the capital and most populous city of France. From the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, from the Place de la Concorde to the Grand and Petit Palais, the evolution of Paris and its history can be seen from the River Seine. Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centers and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. Paris is a famous tourist destination in the world. Paris is visited by about 28 million tourists per year. Paris has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Paris has many famous museums and monuments The Eiffel Tower is the most famous monuments of the Paris with above 200 million visitors till its construction. Disneyland Paris is also a major tourist attraction for tourists of all Europe countries with millions of visitors every year.

5. Moscow is the capital and most populous (census 2010) city of Russia. Russian is the northern most megacity of the world. It is also the most populous city of Europe. Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural and scientific center in Russia and in Europe. Moscow has the largest community of billionaires in the world according to Forbes 2011. Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia. Moscow have four international airports, nine railway terminals and one of the deepest underground metro system in the world, the Moscow Metro. There are four UNESCO World Heritage sites in Moscow.

6. Berlin is the capital and most populous city of Germany. Berlin is located in the bank of the river Spree. About one third of the city’s area is composed of forest, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes. Berlin was the third largest municipality in the world in the 1920s. Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Berlin is a popular tourist destination. Berlin has a yearly total of about 135 million day visitors, which puts it in third place among the most-visited city destinations in the European Union. Moscow has many high-tech industries in which the city’s economy is primarily based. Significant industries include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, electronics, traffic engineering, and renewable energy. Berlin is home to renowned universities, research institutes, orchestras, museums, and celebrities and is host to many sporting events.

7. Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the largest metropolitan area in the world. Tokyo is often thought of as a city but is commonly referred to as a "metropolitan prefecture". Tokyo has been described as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with New York City and London. Tokyo is home of the Japanese government. The Imperial Palace and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family are also situated in the city. Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and is currently a candidate city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

8. Canberra is the capital city of Australia. It was selected as the capital in 1908. Canberra is sea of the ornament of Australia. Parliament House and the High Court is situated in the capital along with several government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defense Force Academy is also located in the capital.

9. Rome is the capital and most populous city of Italy. Rome is situated in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula. Rome is also referred to as “The Eternal City”. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was also capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire in the ancient world. It is regarded as one of the birthplace of western civilization. Rome is the only city in the world to contain in its interior a whole state. One of the most famous tourist destinations in the world and the most visited city in Italy. Rome contains numerous ancient sites, including the Forum Romanum, Trajan's Market, Trajan's Forum, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon, to name but a few. The Colosseum, arguably one of Rome's most iconic archaeological sites, is regarded as a wonder of the world. Rome hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics.

10. Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates in terms of population and the largest of the seven member emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island extend out into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city is the country's center of political, industrial activities, and a major cultural, and commercial centre due to its position as the capital. Abu Dhabi is home to important financial institutions such as the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates and the corporate headquarters of many companies and numerous multinational corporations. Abu Dhabi is the second most expensive city for expatriate employees in the region and 67th most expensive city in the world. Abu Dhabi hosts F1 race every year during the time of November/December starting from 2009 onwards at the Yas Marina Circuit which is considered to be the richest F1 race track in the world.

11. Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. Beijing is the political, cultural and educational center of China. Beijing is a major hub of the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic. Headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies are situated in Beijing. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, gardens, tombs, walls and gates and its art treasures and universities have made it a center of culture and art in China. The city hosted 2008 Summer Olympics.

12. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and is the largest city in the Arab world and Africa. Cairo is located near the Nile Delta. It was founded in 969 AD. Cairo has long been a centre of the region's political and cultural life. Cairo has the world’s 16th largest metropolitan area. Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University. Egypt metro which is one of only two metros in Africa is one of the 15 busiest metro in the world. The economy of Cairo was ranked first in the Middle East and 43rd globally by Foreign Policy's 2010 Global Cities Index.

13. Buenos Aires is the capital and the largest city of Argentina. It is the second largest metropolitan area in South America. The city is located on the western shore of the estuary of the Río de la Plata. It is one of the 20 largest cities of the world. Buenos Aires has been ranked as the most important global city and competitive marketplace of Latin America. Buenos Aires' quality of life is ranked as 61st in the world. Buenos Aires is one of the most visited cities of Latin America. The city is known for European style architecture and rich cultural life, with the highest concentration of theatres in the world.

14. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern edge of the Dead Sea. Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. Jerusalem is a holy city to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam. All branches of the Israeli government are located in Jerusalem, including the Knesset (Israel's parliament), the residences of the Prime Minister and President, and the Supreme Court. Jerusalem is home to the Hebrew University and to the Israel Museum with its Shrine of the Book. The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has ranked consistently as Israel's top tourist attraction for Israelis. The international community does not recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the city hosts no foreign embassies. The Jerusalem Marathon, established in 2011, is an international marathon race held annually in Jerusalem in the month of March.
