2012 SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES : LONDON

Wenlock and Mandeville

The 2012 Summer Olympics also known as 2012 London Olympic was a major international multi sport event. It took place in London, UK from 27^th July to 12 August 2012. More than 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees participated.

The opening ceremony was directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle which received widespread acclaim throughout the world with particular praise from the British public.

WENLOCK & MANDEVILLE were official mascots of the 2012 Olympics. They are animated depicting two drops of steel from steelworks in Bolton. Wenlock was named after Much Wenlock, town in Shropshire, England and Mandeville was named after Stoke Mandeville, a village and a civil parish within Aylesbury district, England.

During the game Michael Phelps of USA became the most decorated athlete of all time by winning his 22^nd medal. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei entered female athletes for the very first time. Women’s boxing was also included for the first time in the history of Olympics.
